They came from Hagenbeck\u2019s menagerie in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Just after the end of World War II there were no polar bears at Tallinn Zoo.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-173\" src=\"http:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/kara1-259x300.png\" alt=\"J\u00e4\u00e4karu Kara\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/kara1-259x300.png 259w, https:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/kara1.png 627w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1964 polar bear cubs <b>Kuubi<\/b> and <b>Kara <\/b>captured in the wild arrived in Tallinn.<\/p>\n<p>In 1983 Kuubi and Kara were transferred to the new location of the zoo at Veskimetsa.<\/p>\n<p>Kuubi died in 1986, Kara lived until 1997 when she died aged 34.<\/p>\n<p>In 1987, 2.5-year-old<b> Uaidi <\/b>born<b> <\/b>at<b> <\/b>Kazan Zoo was brought to Tallinn. Here she was named <b>Vaida.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-174\" src=\"http:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/franz-259x300.png\" alt=\"J\u00e4\u00e4karu Franz\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/franz-259x300.png 259w, https:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/franz.png 627w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 1988 Tallinn Zoo and Moscow Zoo made a joint expedition to Graham Bell Island in Franz Josef Land from where two polar bear cubs, <b>Franz<\/b> and <b>Joosep<\/b>, were brought to Tallinn.<\/p>\n<p>Joosep died from a malignant tumour in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Franz and Vaida had four cubs: <b>Jasper <\/b>(b. 1995), <b>Marta <\/b>(b. 1996), <b>Mart <\/b>(b. 1998)<b>\u00a0<\/b> and <b>Friida <\/b>(b. 2002)<b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Jasper has been transferred to Kaunas Zoo, Marta and Mart to China, and Friida is presently living at Tallinn Zoo.<\/p>\n<p>In 2007, a keeper forgot to close the door of the enclosure and Franz escaped. He was anaesthetised, but unfortunately his heart failed and he died.<\/p>\n<p>In 2009, 8.5-year-old <b>Nord<\/b>, born at Sch\u00f6nbrunn Zoo and maintained at Novosibirsk, arrived in Tallinn. It took some time until Friida and Nord became mates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-172 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/nora-259x300.png\" alt=\"J\u00e4\u00e4karu Nora\" width=\"259\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/nora-259x300.png 259w, https:\/\/polaarium.tallinnzoo.ee\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/nora.png 745w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Their first cub, <b>Nora,<\/b> was born in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>In January 2014 the zoo specialists had to make a difficult decision.
