ABOUT THE POLAR BEAR WORLD

The project „New Home for Polar Bears“ was initiated by Veronika Padar and Olivia Elise Luggenberg who first met each other in the summer of 2012 in front of the polar bear enclosure of the zoo. They were both distressed by the tight living conditions of the bears – the reconstructed former military storehouse seemed completely unsuitable for keeping such big animals. Veronika and Olivia decided to go to the then zoo director Mati Kaal to express their worries and inquire if anything could be done to improve the situation.

ABOUT POLAR BEARS

The polar bear is the world’s largest terrestrial predator, the youngest and most carnivorous member of the bear family. It spends much of its time roaming across the ice fields, hunting its prey near the edge of the ice where they are most abundant. Regardless of its great bulk, the polar bear can be quick and deft, a good swimmer and diver. A typical Arctic dweller, it is protected against cold by thick fur and a fat layer under the skin.

CLIMATE

The Earth’s climate has changed throughout history. While climate changes prior to the industrial revolution took place over millions or tens of millions of years and can be explained by natural causes, the cause of recent changes is not natural alone. The unprecedented rate of global warming since the mid-20th century is most likely the result of human acitivites and greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere. History does not know such a rapid temperature increase on the Earth before.
